Dr. Monaghan’s compassion for patients led him into the field of oncology and has kept him caring for cancer patients for more than 25 years. He spent 21 of those years with Missouri Cancer Associates in Columbia, Mo. and providing coverage at the George Rea Cancer Center in Kirksville, Mo. before joining Kansas City Cancer Center in 2004. Dr. Monaghan graduated with honors from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo. He received his medical degree and a concurrent master’s degree in public health and epidemiology from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He subsequently completed an internal medicine residency and hematology/medical oncology fellowship, also at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Monaghan is board certified in internal medicine. In recent years, Dr. Monaghan has become more focused on his own spirituality and believes that has helped him to be more aware of his patients’ emotional health, as well as their physical health. He makes it a priority to personally follow-up with each patient’s referring physician to ensure that they are informed of the patient’s condition and treatment plan. Born in Charles City, Iowa, Dr. Monaghan is married with three grown children and one grandson. In his spare time, he enjoys gourmet cooking, wine collecting and landscaping.
